An elevator pitch is an integral part of the internship and job search process. The elevator pitch is a brief outline of your achievement and past work experience as well as an introduction to who you are as a person. It gets its name from the idea that your pitch should be short enough to present on an elevator ride, and is typically the answer to the question, “Tell me a little bit about yourself”. The main components you should include while giving your Elevator pitch include:

  1. INTRODUCTION - The Intro to your elevator pitch is your chance to give your name, your current year, and what institution you attend as well as what you are majoring in. The introduction shouldn’t be any more than a sentence or two.

2. WHICH POSITION - This is your opportunity to use any research you’ve conducted on the company to explain why you like the companies’ cultures and values. It is also your chance to explain which position you would like and why have you chosen to apply to this company. Once again, this part does not need to be long, but just a few sentences to show that you came prepared for the interview or networking event.

3. WHY YOU SHOULD HIRE ME - Focus on the requirements of the job provided in the job description when you applied and tell a story or give experiences from your past that apply to this position. DO NOT tell them everything on your resume. Rather pick the most important points that make you competent for the job and elaborate on them. This should be the bulk of your elevator pitch.

4. ASK ANY QUESTIONS - Once you’re finished giving, your full elevator pitch, depending on the situation, ask any questions that you may have. Asking questions is a great way to keep the conversation going with the employer/recruiter. It also shows that you’re interested in the company.
